It’s always hard to say good-bye, especially when it’s a dear friend that’s played such a huge role in our lives here at SHACC. Sadly, Bill Blackburn, a founding partner and our first president, has slipped from this world.

Blackburn, President Emeritus and Founding Partner of SHACC, started surfing in 1950 and comes from a family that spent nearly 40 years at San O. Today four generations of Blackburn have enjoyed the gift of surfing.

Bill attained a degree in history from Stanford in 1965 and worked for Dean Witter & Co. until

‘73, when he joined the family business located in Oceanside and moved to Laguna Beach. In ’89, Bill acquired Hobie Sunglasses and ran the company until ‘96.

Towards the end of his days he spent most of his free time enjoying his grandchildren, surfing ’Nofre and skiing/fly fishing in Idaho or Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in memory of Bill.
