Archivist/Collections Manager Position Opening

Position Description

SHACC is surfing’s premier surf museum with an extensive collection of surfboards, photos (digital, analog, negatives, and slides), oral histories, books, periodicals, artwork, posters, film and video, music, surf attire, skateboards, and items from other board sports that were “birthed” through surfing.

Responsibilities/Essential Duties:

  • Manage the entire collection (library, archive, three-dimensional objects, and digital assets)
  • Report to and interface well with the Executive Director
  • Act as administrator of and input information into SHACC’s database- The Museum System and eMuseum
  • Train staff on software use and monitor the system for adherence to policy
  • Handle research requests, requests to film or photograph, and image licensing
  • Work with SHACC’s historical experts to identify and become familiar with SHACC’s artifacts
  • Catalog incoming donations and loans, as well as the backlog
  • Collaborate with IT to troubleshoot automations, integrations, and network issues
  • Implement policies and safeguards to keep digital assets secure and ensure necessary backups
  • Enforce the collections management policy and all other general policies and procedures related to the collection (including IPM)
  • Lead the Collections Committee
  • Assist with curation or curate as needed
  • Assist in all aspects of museum and donor events
  • Ability to handle, carry, and move assets, including surfboards or other artifacts of various shapes and sizes (unless large or heavy)
  • Manage and coordinate all aspects of long-term storage of artifacts
  • Supervise archive assistants

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Museum Studies degree, MLIS/MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent experience and professional training
  • 2 years of experience
  • Skilled in digital asset management, collections management, accessions, deaccessions, and collections management systems

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion and familiarity with surfing and its history, and willingness to absorb surfing’s history and the role that SHACC’s objects play in it
  • Experience with The Museum System and eMuseum
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365 (especially Excel), Salesforce, Google Drive, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Collaborative and collegial attitude
  • Experience working with 3D, 2D, and digital objects
  • Interest in developing technical and project management skills
  • Ability to work as a solo archivist
  • Excellent self-organizational skills
  • Ability to stay on task while interfacing with wide variety of day to day operations
  • Experience hiring, training, and supervising

 

Compensation:

Starting at $50,000, commensurate with experience.
